Single Review / Golden Slumbers – Elbow

It is that time of year again, folks. Yes, the festive season means only one thing: Christmas adverts. In particular, the nation waits in anticipation for the unveiling of the new John Lewis advert each and every year, in the past helping artists to achieve number one singles and simultaneously causing the British public to cry into their cups of tea. This year the department store has chosen a Beatles cover for their latest tear-jerking instalment, with Bury boys Elbow taking on the Abbey Road track, ‘Golden Slumbers’.

Single Review / Look What You Made Me Do – Taylor Swift

The old Taylor Swift is dead. At least, that’s what she’s telling herself and above all, wants you to believe. In reality, the country-turned-pop star is the same as she ever was – even if she doesn’t realise it – only this time with a new addition: her most controversial single to date, ‘Look What You Made Me Do’. We all know that One Direction were never the most innocent of boybands to exist, but with his new single, Horan has gone for a much more raw, sexier vibe that will surely be welcomed by his fans.

Single Review / One Day I’ll Fly Away – VAULTS

Another year, another John Christmas advert. When the festive period hits, the British public waits in anticipation to see just what the department store will do next. In the past, we’ve been treated to animals waking up from hibernation in time for Christmas, a lonely man on the moon, even a long lost snowman couple, all set to a festive cover from the likes of Tom Odell, Lily Allen, Gabrielle Aplin, to name but a few. This year sees the turn of electronica trio, VAULTS.

Single Review / Someone That Loves You – HONNE & Izzy Bizu

HONNE are already well-known for their unique electronic soul. They have previously been described as set ‘to re-invent babymaking music’, which is pretty indisputable when listening to their first couple of EPs. However, their collaboration with up-and-comer Izzy Bizu and latest single ‘Someone That Loves You’ is a slight departure from the likes of ‘The Night’ and ‘3AM’.

Single Review / Dear Future Husband – Meghan Trainor

When most people think of the differences between men and women nowadays, one would hope the word ‘equality’ springs to mind. The support and awareness of feminism and equality between the sexes is one that has been prevalent more than ever these past few years, with female artists such as Beyoncé and Taylor Swift being icons for strong and independent females of all ages. However, every now and then there are songs such as Meghan Trainor’s ‘Dear Future Husband’ that flip all of this on its head. With a reputation for controversial lyrics, this comes as no surprise.
