Last month the world watched as one of the largest sexual abuse scandals in sporting history finally came to a dramatic end. Since 2016, former Team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar has been publicly accused by over 150 women and girls of sexual assault. The use and abuse of his position that would allow him to come into close contact with so many of these young women turned stomachs the world over, including that of judge Rosalie Aquilina. The final hearing created further headlines, with Aquilina sentencing the disgraced doctor to a minimum of 40 years and a maximum of 175 years in prison for his crimes. She emphatically addressed him following this announcement: ‘I just signed your death warrant’.
Christmas – a joyous time spent with family and friends, being thankful for the time we have with said loved ones. However, given the consumerist society in which we live, it perhaps comes as no surprise to learn that exploitation is the dish being served for many this festive season. Facing particular backlash in this regard is the ‘Queen’ of YouTube, Zoella.
It’s been a long four years, but the wait is finally over: the HAIM sisters are back with their sophomore release, Something to Tell You. Being hailed as a breezy, soft-rock revival, the album sounds a far more polished, glossy effort, which is hard to believe given the high production value on their 2013 debut, Days Are Gone.
Three years ago, the warm, baritone vocals of singer-songwriter George Ezra cemented him as one of the UK’s most loved and best-selling artists. His first hit ‘Budapest’ was a sleeper, slowly but surely becoming one of the most popular songs of 2014, and with his debut album Wanted On Voyage being an unprecedented success, namely for the man himself (it rose to the number one spot after four months in the chart), Ezra is back to prove he can do it all over again. With his new single, ‘Don’t Matter Now’, it seems he could have another hit on his hands.
With yet another change in line-up, Paramore are back with their fifth studio album After Laughter. Following Jeremy Davis’s departure, Hayley Williams and Taylor York are re-joined by Zac Farro, one of the founding members of the band who previously left alongside brother Josh in 2010. With this new line-up comes a whole new style and sound, building on their previous poppy efforts ‘Ain’t It Fun’ and ‘Still Into You’.
Another week, another 1D member’s solo effort. This time, Niall Horan is back a second time round with new single, ‘Slow Hands’, and it’s clear that with this track, Horan is well and truly attempting to shake his seemingly holier-than-thou boyband image. We all know that One Direction were never the most innocent of boybands to exist, but with his new single, Horan has gone for a much more raw, sexier vibe that will surely be welcomed by his fans.
Despite being the second flavour of new, long-awaited music from our favourite LA sisters, ‘Want You Back’ is the first official single from HAIM’s upcoming second album, Something to Tell You. The track is a plea, a promise, and above all, the title screams of how an entire world of HAIM fans have felt for the last four years or so: it’s good to have them back.
If you’ve read my latest year abroad post, you’ll know that the last couple of months have been really busy what with university and visits and Easter. Due to this, I had no time for last month’s roundup, but here’s a double whammy of March and April for you.
